The Trobriand Islands are situated in Milne Bay to the East of the Papua New Guinea mainland. They made famous by the anthropologist Malinowski who wrote about the cultural life and their significance in the Kula Ring a traditional trading group which operated between the islands in the area where beautiful shell knecklesses and arttifacts were traded to cement cultural ties between the islands. Aswell as the Islands unspoilt natural beauty their cultural and artistic significance is world renowned.

Island cultural life is bound up with the sea and the only way to appreciate the real character of the islands is to be able to cruise from island to island. The Melanesian Discoverer provide the ideal way to explore the intricacies and relationships with the environment which make this place unique.

If you are going to join the Melanesian Discoverer your flight from Port Moresby will follow the spectacular Owen Stanley Range which eventually disappear into the Coral Sea, forming the Louisiade Archipelago.

Upon arrival at the airport transfer to the wharf at Alotau where you will board the MTS Discoverer. The Cruise Director will assign you a cabin followed by a safety and cruise in the lounge prior to departure.

The Trobrianders are lissome dancers and during the time we spend amongst them we shall enjoy entertainment either on shore or aboard the ship. Wherever possible we stay a full day on a particular island, thus giving sufficient time to walk into villages which are often situated in the centre of an island close to the yam gardens, and time also to enjoy the beaches.

DIVING: Throughout the Milne Bay area, including the D'Entrecasteaux Group, Trobriand Islands, Marshall Bennetts, West New Britain, Tami, Finschafen, Siassi Group excellent diving is available as an option to land excursions. Diving is restricted to certified divers and not included in the cost of the cruise.
